The second edition of the Canarias Ladies Open held in Lanzarote Golf last 23rd and 24th September, was a great success. A total of 28 women from ten different nationalities, had the opportunity to enjoy a tournament with a lot of sportsmanship and some weather difficulties. A sunny morning accompanied the participants on the first day on Friday. On Saturday, despite being waiting for a huge storm according to the weather forecast, the competitors were able to overcome the rain and show their best swing to finish the tournament in a spectacular way. On Friday 23rd all teams arrived at Lanzarote Golf course where a welcome pack was kindly offered by Hotel Sentido Lanzarote Aequora, official sponsor of the Canarias Ladies Open. A stunning weather, sunny and calm, allowed the sportswomen to play our course. After finishing, all groups moved to the emblematic Castillo de San José where they enjoyed an exquisite dinner offered by Turismo Lanzarote, partner of the tournament.
The following day, the alert for wind and rain in the archipelago created a somewhat uneasy start to the game, due to the possibility of having to suspend the competition. In the end, however, the participants were able to finish the tournament successfully, albeit in the rain. Once the tournament was over, all the teams went to the Hotel Sentido Lanzarote Aequora, where they enjoyed a cocktail. Afterwards, the prize-giving ceremony took place. The classification was divided by scratch and handicap, two teams respectively for each classification. In the scratch category, the Real Club de Golf de Tenerife team took first place with a score of 399 strokes, followed in second position by the Lanzarote Golf team with 472 strokes.
As for the handicap competition, the results gave the victory to the Club Golf Maioris team, with a total of 371 strokes. In second place was the team of Costa Teguise Golf 2 with a total of 388. The highlight of the awards ceremony was when Virginia Moraleda and Ángeles Meseguer, ambassadors of the Solheim Cup, awarded a special prize to the closest ball of the 2nd day. María Inés Morán was the winner of this distinction. It is worth mentioning that our course was also awarded with a Solheim Cup flag. As for the special prizes, Belén Pedrajas and Ineés Hristov were awarded the special prize for the longest drive on hole 9.
The nearest the pin on hole 3 was awarded to Ineés Hristov and Ana María González.
Finally, the nearest the pin on the 17th hole went to Ils Rouckhout and Esther Hernández, in the first round, and Consuelo López de Vergara in the second round. Sporting events such as the Canarias Ladies Open highlight the skills and attitude of female athletes in golf. The organization of Lanzarote Golf is proud to be able to host a competition of these characteristics, but even more to have been able to contemplate the swing of each of the participating golfers. We really hope this tournament to become an annual event for all players, both in the Canary Islands and at national and international level.
Thank you all very much, see you soon on the green!
